NOTAFLOF

Since its inception, FLX Squares has been committed to hosting community square dances that are inclusive and welcoming. That philosophy extends to our standard admission policy: a suggested minimum contribution of $10 along with the acronym NOTAFLOF, short for “No One Turned Away For Lack Of Funds.”

As both a term and an ethos, “NOTAFLOF” first emerged in DIY and queer subcultures in the early 2010s. Piotr Orlov’s Substack article “In Praise of NOTAFLOF”  is a fascinating exploration of its history and meaning. For FLX Squares, NOTAFLOF means that we value active participation as much as financial contribution and that we will treat every attendee at our events with kindness and respect, regardless of their ability to pay.

NOTAFLOF is a key component of our work to nurture a space in which the three main prongs of a performance community — venues, audiences, and performers — equally contribute to AND mutually benefit from a sustainable and accessible scene. In addition to our amazing family of dancers, we’ve been so lucky to have Stone Bend Farm as a hosting partner that shares our values and vision.
